Why Can’t We Make it Here? – Goes Viral!
e-Con e-News 12-18 July 2020

Kuvanna’s Song
Kuvanna, tell us who made your spinning wheel?
Who taught you to weave? Can our elders tell?
Those drums Vijaya heard, who made them?
Why’d he grow so afraid on hearing those beats?
Can our elders recall those beats?
Those drums echo the pulse of our bursting hearts,
Beating out the rhythms for those who built
Great canals, lakes, stupendous stupa?
Who organized those workers? Who shaped their hammers and chisels?
Who fed them? Can our elders find out?
How did farmers make new seeds, sharp sickles, deep ploughs?
How shall our children learn how to grow?
Can our elders beat the drums? Quicken our pulse, our hearts, our hands?
To beat out the rhythms to make the wheel?
To spin out a new world again?
• Miniran Balakaya’s Why Can’t We Make it Here? • Ask Local Candidates?
• Multinationals Monopolize Sri Lanka Media • White Goodies Grease Elections
• Video co-op Miniran Balakaya’s documentary Why Can’t We Make it Here? has reached almost 200,000 people in one week, with 6,000 ‘likes’, and almost 600 people sharing the video. All this without corporate sponsorship. One would think such ‘celebrity’ would intrigue the hourly/daily media? No way! They’re too busy suckling the chemistries of fair&lovely Unilever, who dominate our advertising, media, and most tragic of all, our home market – thereby preventing local industrialization.
A visit to Mini-B’s facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/miniranbalakaya), shows how enthralled people are by the art and science of making things. This ee notes the 100s of comments about the short video, many of which reveal a deep deadly frustration, cynicism, disillusion, and yet, even in its dudgeon, evinces clear yearning for a change to our colonial import-export plantation economy (see ee Focus, B1)
• Miniran Balakaya declares: “Our Why Can’t We Make it Here? video was made to support modern industrialization in Sri Lanka. Please contact your local election candidates, tell them about the video, and ask them to support a plan for modern industrialization in Lanka. Ask them how you can help. The capitalist media won’t discuss this, but we need to start a national conversation on this issue, because there are many misunderstandings and myths: We have a large home market but it’s filled with imports. Also, modern industrialization is more than making goods. Modern industrialization is the making of machines that make goods, but also requires the creation of an ecosystem of machinofacture in which production thrives.
The farmer could supply inexpensive food for workers in industry, who supply the machinery and technological tools to help the farmer produce inexpensively. Inexpensive food means workers save more and can spend on goods made by industry. Industries supplying goods for workers and farmers could get their machinery and raw materials from other industries. The farmers with technology could then afford to buy goods for their families” – youtube.com/watch?v=0WUrUpKBMnM
• Multinationals Monopolize SL Media – Harangues thunder against import restrictions and import substitution, midst the refrain for “exports” and “foreign exchange” to sustain their import-export plantation slave economy. At the same time, beware of so-called headlines about occasional fancy ‘inventions’ and ‘Made-in-Sri-Lanka products,’ thrown as crumbs.
The daily media is totally in the pockets of the import mafia, led from behind by the “Leading Multinationals” (see ee Focus). Some media quietly signal in grey ink at the bottom of stories that their news is “sponsored”. But that’s not the only sponsored news. The entire media has been sold out!
Beware of the deadly ‘infinitive’ tense – “to” do, etc – in headlines, which are only promises, rarely fulfilled – “to enact”, “to be self-sufficient”, to be accomplished”, etc.
Industrialization requires a holistic state-sponsored political, economic and military strategy. Capitalists are clearly not interested! ee keeps asking: “Where have all the profits gone?” “Where is the industrial plan?”
• Why isn’t the Elections Commission, during our elections, preventing foreign donations by white embassies under the camouflage of various “good works” – Covid, women’s rights, anti-narcotics, training, etc? And is it not the job of the Treasury to monitor such slush funds clearly meant to influence the election? These embassies represent multinational corporations who are responsible for much of the corruption – well, to be precise, underdevelopment – in our world. (see ee Focus, Multinationals & Violence)

ee thanks Readers who send articles of interest. Please excerpt or summarize what is important about any article sent, or your comments, and place the e-link at the end. It’s better to send them as email.
• “Being ‘non-aligned’ is imprecise, craven and weak. We need an ‘independence’ policy. We need to be independent! We should ally with whoever helps us most become independent.”
• “It is policies that matter. We should request socialist China to assist us to develop our energy and mineral resources like natural gas, iron, graphite, titanium, to make agricultural machinery here in rural areas. This will raise the bar for other countries who claim they wish to be friends!”
• “Another comprehensive and analytical newsletter”
• “1953 and 1956 stories were so revealing…The BBC this week tried to take the blame away from a still-in-power Queen for the sacking of Australian Gough Whitlam in 1975 by her representative, the Governor General. Their dear queen is declared free of blame for her rep in Australia removing a PM who had a majority in parliament. When Maithripala removed Ranil, the queen’s government was shocked. The Aussie precedent forgotten!” (see ee Sovereignty)
• “Did Buddhaghosa burn all the original Buddhist texts in Sinhala?”
ee responds: As far as ee knows. much of the Buddhist tales was an oral tradition until first written down in Lanka in Sinhala: “Malalasekera quotes from another report, ‘of this whole library of books expository of the Tipitaka, a bonfire ‘as high as 7 average aged elephants’ was made…” ee also agrees with authors who state it doesn’t matter if the stories about Buddhghosa are true. ee’s interested in the taxes he refers to. • “Marx died in 1884, not 1883…”
ee: True, and the RALH Gunwardana reference should perhaps read: “Marx made detailed notes on the system of land tenure, particularly such practices as ande, betma, thattumaru and service tenure.” Marx’s ghost indeed hangs over us: he was born in 1818, Lanka’s first war of liberation from England.

A2. Quotes of the Week_
“Some Sri Lankan political myths… are communicated over and over again by some experienced people. Either they’ve not been informed or they’re misguiding the people… eg, under the English there were only 929 Doctors to support a population of 6.6 million people. However, Ceylon had 147,000 servants, dhobies, and watchers. The infant mortality rate was 26% and the literacy rate was 58%. Only 70,000 spoke in English. There were 418 Civil Engineers. There were 30,000 school teachers to support a population of 2.5 million between the ages of 5-15 years. With the above track record, some people still state that Ceylon – Sri Lanka – has not achieved much for the last 70 years. You could make direct comparisons to each indicator as of now. Some say that before independence, colonial Ceylon managed to have a surplus budget. Indeed if services towards education, health and welfare are not adequately provided, achieving a budget surplus is a simple process.”
• “People in many parts of the country suffer due to lack of water for drinking and irrigation purposes. Tanks and irrigation systems have nearly collapsed. Development of the road network in rural areas should be expedited. Development projects serve no purpose if they fail to meet the basic needs of the people.” (see ee Industry, President to Engineers)
• “What began to bother the West was the degree to which China, for all of its superficial adaptations to capitalist logic, was dramatically outperforming its competitors in the West, seemingly benefiting from the state management of economic activity, despite political authoritarianism, in a manner superior to what seemed possible in the developed societies of the West, especially with respect to savings and the investment of public funds. This dynamic is brilliantly depicted for Asia as whole by the Indian economist Deepak Nayyar, in The Asian Resurgence: Diversity in Development (2019), which suggested an overall post-colonial Asian challenge to Western ascendancy in which 14 Asian countries, led by China, produced the most remarkable record of economic growth and poverty alleviation in the past 50 years that the world has ever known, and these countries achieved these remarkable results without the trappings of liberal democracy, thus drawing into question the US claim that market-driven constitutionalism was the only arrangement of state/society relations that was legitimate and materially successful.” (see ee Security, Richard Falk)
• “If you want to become another Tarzan, a white man coming among black men, leading them and protecting them… it can’t be done.” So said Egypt’s charismatic young leader, the tribune of Pan-Arabism, Gamal Abdel Nasser, to another young revolutionary, Che Guevara, on the eve of Che’s journey to the forests of Kivu Province in the former Belgian Congo to spearhead revolution in the heart of Africa.”
When Guevara first met Nasser in 1959 in the course of his initial postrevolutionary tour of Africa, he asked him how many refugees had been created in Egypt’s own revolution. Nasser replied, only a few, which Guevara declared meant “that nothing much happened in your revolution… I measure the depth of the social transformation by the number of people who are affected by it and feel they have no place in the new society.”
• “This American system of ours gives to each and every one of us a great opportunity if we only seize it with both hands and make the most of it” – Al Capone
• “In our small misguided countries, we have lost our way, and the political party system has basically tribalized the countries in such a way that our countries are in a constant state of disaffection and ferment. Blind loyalty to the political party is always stronger than loyalty to the nation. Black populations that have been robbed, battered and raped by the colonizers have meekly chosen to retain the colonial sovereign as their head of state, while still arguing that they are independent. They also meekly accept a development agenda designed by the colonizers and put under the supervision of institutions like the IMF and the World Bank. They meekly accepted the burden of the so-called Millennium Development Goals (8 targets), and when that was clearly taking them nowhere, they later accepted the new burden of the Sustainable Development Goals (17 targets).
Where are our brains, and why would we so trustingly depend on our perpetual slave masters to lead us into a bright future?” – Herman Grant, Jamaican economist.

A3. Random Notes (‘Seeing Number in Chaos’)_
• The Central Bank issued a pitiful plea this week for banks (& related finance/leasing companies) to abstain from physical violence against recalcitrant clients, to prevent “the use of force in the possession of equipment”.
How will this non-violence be achieved under the rule of merchants and moneylenders, who operate warlords to ensure extortion of harvests, and repayment of extortionate loans taken to pay for industrial goods? These merchants are beholden to multinational corporations, who supply cultivators with inputs (fertilizer, pesticides, machinery, clothes, goods) to barter to cultivators in exchange for next year’s harvest. Keeping the cultivators non-monetized!
While the media love to blame politicians and government, the private sector multinational monopolies are the major source of corruption in the country. Bribery and violence – “as American as Apple Pie!” – is fundamental to the maintenance of these foreign monopolies.
Our scholars in Sri Lanka, let alone NGOs such as WB-linked Transparency International, have shied away from exposing the relationship between monopoly and violence and corruption of banks, manufacturers and distributors such as Caltex/Exxon (which rules the energy industry, hence our roads and wires), Unilever (FMCGs, shops, advertising & media), Nestlé (milk, water, collection, distribution), Ceylon Tobacco (Shops), Baur (fertilizer), etc, and of course the fundamental role of banks such as Citibank (linked to Exxon), Standard Chartered & HSBC – all linked to 500 years of chattel slavery, the drug trade (opium), and imperialism.
An equally pitiful interview with a “Transparency International” official in Colombo asking about private sector corruption got no answer from him. Though it is abundantly clear the private sector is far far more corrupt than the public sector. TI is a slave of its master, the World Bank, whose interest, like its master, the US Treasury, is making the state subservient to capitalism. (see ee Focus, Multinationals & Monopoly)
• Yankee Wars – Those who still insist it was Sinhala Buddhists behind the murder of SWRD Banadaranaike, should read Kamalika Peries’ extensive essays on Erasing the Eelam Victory (see ee Sovereignty). More recent claims suggest the murder was to prevent the implementation of the 10-year Plan for industrialization as well.
• Many Small/Medium Enterprises are tourist ventures! No wonder the World Bank, the US, the EU, the ADB, all get so orgasmic about SMEs! All this fuss, all this digital and carbonic ink – the mountain labours and gives forth a hikmeeya! As ee reiterates over and over again, if the country were turned into a giant tourist hotel or a tea plantation, we would not need schools! For there are no special skills required! Plucking leaves! Plantations are minimal-skill labor-intensive operations. Tourism is rentier activity par excellence. Selling scenery and a usually imported bed! Sweeping rooms, serving tea? Yes sir? No, sir! Is this what a great civilization amounts to after all the grand chronicles? (see ee Business)
• The Tobacco Lobby – Here’s a list of the tobacco trade’s interference in health affairs during Covid. Sri Lanka’s medical specialists urge the government not to pretend there’s no Covid crisis.
– tobaccounmaskedsouth.asia/Globally_Reported_Tobacco_Industry_Interference_during_COVID-19_Pandemic
• Drops in Smoking in England – “This purported drop occurred despite the despicable attempt by the Tobacco lobby to create the impression that smoking was protective – through an obscure group’s ‘study’. These studies are then amplified in popular media, even if they lose credibility in scientific circles for their flawed methodology. And they’re quoted in comments, even at the end of reports on proper studies with large samples. It can be seen in this one too. Smokers allow the tobacco trade to resort to any deception, to keep them smoking, without a murmur. And even defend the trade’s nastiest actions. They find higher covid mortality associations with several factors – including current smoking. But the single catch-all label they use in their conclusions is – ‘underlying cardiovascular disease’. Smoking is not mentioned in their conclusions. Smoking as a risk is safely relegated to the results section alone. BBC makes sure it softens the blow with a balancing slant at the end, to ensure that most smokers will think the much greater risk of death need not be taken too seriously.”

B1. Criticisms & Responses to Why Can’t we Make it Here?
Here are some critical comments (translated from Sinhala) made by random viewers about the Miniran Balakaya video, Why Can’t We Make it Here?, and the possibilities for industrialization:
• ‘We lack a big market • We have no discipline • Politicians won’t get commissions from import mafia • We’re incapable. We’re not innovators, we’re imitators • Too much drug money, too many rentiers • Stupid education system, idiotic voters, those who get and give votes should answer this video • Too much jealousy, too many lies, as long as rogues in power, they’ll never allow • We need to make people first, too many bureaucrats • This video promotes SLFP, but what have they done since 1994? • We can’t make everything in Sri Lanka. We’d go bankrupt, and the government have to rescue them. • We need to choose what imports to substitute carefully, what will make a profit over the long term, and bring foreign exchange. • A lack of knowledge isn’t the problem, it’s fraud, corruption, commissions, not thinking about the country, individual greed, not realizing we’re all going to die eventually, this is how most people think. No point talking. • Industrial work has to be considered a dignified occupation • Socialism doesn’t work • We have the best pepper, yet we import bad pepper and ruin the farmer…’
– https://www.facebook.com/miniranbalakaya.
Responses to a few of the comments above:
• ‘Some claim Sri Lanka’s market is too small to support industrialization. And the media also promotes this. This week, Pathfinder’s Milinda Moragoda also reiterated this myth in the Island. Yet multinational Unilever’s chairman has clearly stated: “The consumer base in SL’s Western Province is almost equal to the consumer base in Thailand which is affluent and modern”! (Yes, Thailand, which has 70 million people!)’
• ‘Private-sector multinational monopolies are the major source of corruption in the country. Bribery and violence is fundamental to the maintenance of these foreign monopolies. Corruption is not the most major issue, and not just a matter of politicians alone. Officials and businesspeople are heavily involved. Our biggest issue is the lack of unity and organization to push such demands.’
• ‘Politicians are the products of interests, and it was a strong workers’ movement from the 1950s-70s that demanded local industrial production. So it’s vital that workers and peasants prioritize and synchronize actions and demands.’
• ‘The media constantly claims we need foreign exchange, foreign direct investment, and exports. Yet what’s being done with the foreign exchange we get now? Foreign investment is dominated by multinational corporations, mainly based in the US, Canada, Western Europe, Japan.’
• ‘Some insist we need foreign exchange, etc, yet also insult socialist countries, especially China. They forget it’s the socialist countries who supported much of Sri Lanka’s early industrial efforts, and it’s China who would have a clear interest in us not remaining a tool of the white man. China also helped us defeat terrorism.
• ‘Our links with foreign friends should be based on their interest in helping us become an independent modern industrial country. Most industrial countries have “content laws” where a major % of any imported product must be made inside their country.

B2. An Open Letter to Ms Alaina Teplitz of the US Embassy – Sri Lanka Study Circle
“We, the members of the Sri Lanka Study Circle in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka – a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement, the largest organized grouping of Nations after the UN, that initiated a UN General Assembly Resolution in 1971 unanimously adopted by the entire World to make forever the Indian Ocean a Zone of Peace within which area No Nuclear Weapons whatsoever would be permitted – are perturbed by your insensitive and hypocritical attitude in not providing the Sri Lankan people official Sinhala and Tamil translations of the draft MCC Conditional-Contract made out in English, which too was made public only a few months ago, while you took time and effort to have your MCC propaganda material… translated into Sinhala and Tamil.
This matter is of grave importance to the people of this country, about 98% of whom do not have an intricate knowledge of the English Language – and that includes parliamentarians – to read, understand and give an independent opinion on an issue that affects the very Sovereignty and future of the Country, her people and the unborn generations of Sri Lankans whose Fundamental Rights will be adversely affected.
When Agreements such as these are signed or are being prepared to be signed behind the backs of the People and their Representatives, you are working against the very norms of civilized behaviour laid out clearly in the Vienna Convention on International Treaties.
We, the members of the Sri Lanka Study Circle, demand that you make available immediately to the people of Sri Lanka the official Sinhala and Tamil translations of the draft MCC Conditional-Contract and in the same measure make available to the people the originals and translations of the SOFA and ACSA.
We demand that you do so immediately, before the General Elections, because the people can then study these Agreements and the election results will reflect in no uncertain terms what the people think of these ‘Agreements’ and the motives of the USA.”

B3. Multinationals, Violence & Corruption
Multinational Banks and Corporations, such as Citibank, Exxon, Standard Chartered, Unilever, Ceylon Tobacco, Nestlé, etc., are the key instruments of finance capital. The world economy is maintained by the 5 monopolies of finance, technology, the planet’s resources, communications, and military power. The highest offices of these multinational corporations are concentrated in New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo. Washington coordinates the triad of the US & Canada, Western Europe, and Japan to ensure the imperialist system is greased.
Multinational Corporations arose out of the concentration and centralization of capital, which created monopoly capital by the 20th century. They operate across countries and different industries, as arms of an imperialist world system. These MNCs firms entangle state structures and class societies, to profit from the capitalist system and the division between imperialist centre and most of the world.
Most corporate giants which control the US economy travelled the road pioneered by Standard Oil (Exxon) to become multinational corporations. MNCs operate abroad, and make fundamental decisions on marketing, production, and research. Controlling foreign investment (especially in manufacturing) and internalizing external transaction costs (at the same time inflating prices and avoiding taxes), they are the dominant employer of industrial workers, shifting labour-intensive manufacture at will across the world. They exploit global wage differentials to lower wages, enforce capital shortages and underdevelopment (preventing transfer of high technology and science) to maximize their profits, sucking out massive surpluses from our countries.
The 21st century has seen “an explosion in the treaties, agreements, and other mechanisms whereby global capital imposes rules, regulations, and modes of behaviour upon governments and their citizenry… [Former US President] Obama, speaking at Nike headquarters in May 2015, declared: “We have to make sure that America writes the rules of the global economy, while our economy is in the position of global strength. Because if we don’t write the rules for trade around the world,” there will come a time when, “guess what – China will”.
At Rutgers University in May 2016, Obama advised the new graduates – who soon would “go out there and conquer the world” – against dreaming of the “good old days”, because they actually “weren’t that great”. But there were exceptions, Obama quickly added, like the periods following the end of WW2 and the Cold War, “when the world bent more easily to our will”. Today, he assured his audience, things are once again improving, and the US need no longer fear the future, because “we seized the future and made it our own.” The world is more interconnected than ever, and “building walls won’t change that.” In this “age of global supply chains”, the nation’s task is to “make sure that international rules are consistent with our values”.
“The word ‘value’ works in two senses here, given Obama’s reference to global commodity chains. In his vision, the world should continue ‘to bend to our will’ and to ‘our’ freely appropriated, commodified values – rather than theirs. For all [Obama’s] talk of the future, a look at the history of the imperialist global economy shows the assumptions underlying these remarks are anything but novel.”
– monthlyreview.org/2016/07/01/multinational-corporations-and-the-globalization-of-monopoly-capital-from-the-1960s-to-the-present/
• British American Tobacco’s Ceylon Tobacco Corporation initiated & hosted the first Leading Multinational Corporations (LMNC) meetings in Sri Lanka, starting Jan 2018: For multinationals “To speak as a single voice, in order to implement things through the govt… to ensure [LMNC] constantly interacts” with officials (& corrupts them!) The LMNCs’ first inspirational speaker was named “Lawless”!
The LMNC claim they make a “large revenue & tax contribution”, and most have “roots for over a century” in Lanka. MNCs have “a value chain of 180,000 people” and “bring in an estimated 125bn in tax revenue… 6% of total govt revenue”. They feel “a lack of appreciation”, and also whine, “CTC is heavily taxed” , upset about govt regulations & taxes. CTC blames health problems on “non-standard smokes’, and want the same “status to compete with local corporates”.
MNCS here want “decent payback” for their investment, and want “to establish a model where industry consultation is the norm not the exception”, to “make it a more open economy”, open to “more foreign investments”. They wish to “change the mindset of leaders of the country”, “to take on international competition”. That “everything needs to be fixed in the context of international standards, in terms of human rights & labor law too”, so as “to come out of this slow domestic economy which is mainly agricultural”. He finds employees “too afraid to speak… & challenge hierarchy”…
ee does have a question for NSBM: Could the “local corporates” refer to Vallibel, Hayley’s, etc, who are really fronts for MNCs?! And do ‘human rights’ include economic rights?

B4. Police, Gansabha & Conciliation Boards
From Police Role by Dr Frank de Silva, former Inspector General of Police:
“Law’s delay is one of the culprits resulting in unrestrained public expenditure and driving parties to greater crime. Dragging on the process in courts is a systemic failure of the criminal justice process. Distortion, corruption and inefficiency are the other factors which deter access to justice. These are simply the result of vested interests manipulating the system…”
De Silva attributes the laws delay to the monopolistic trends that run through the criminal justice process. “Law making is determined by law professionals without consulting the community or other affected parties. Rules drafted to prescribe the police without consulting the police, is conduct which fits into the descriptive phrase of Lawyers’ law. They are in effect, ‘rules of lawyers, rules made by lawyers, rules for lawyers in lawyers’ interest’. Accordingly a role for police is diminished to the extent of separation of the law from the community.”
“In 1959 a step to rectify the situation in involving the community was taken with the introduction of a law to establish Conciliation Boards, which had many advantages. Such involvement enabled the community to identify itself with the formal law in a meaningful manner than through the formal courts. Resolution of these problems was equally expeditious. The parties to the dispute benefited from the little expense the parties now had to incur. Conciliation of crimes and disputes through conciliation and mediation gave some relief to the police from the weight of the court process.”
“In fact this was more or less getting back to the gansabhava system.” De Silva cites Dr GC Mendis’s reference to Colebrook’s statement: “I consider that the ancient mode of referring such cases to a Gamsaba or a Village Council would be advantageously preserved where it is established and restored where it has been superseded.” According to Fr SG Perera, Colebrook attended a meeting of gamsabhava and was much impressed by the institution. Dr Ralph Pieris in his book, Sinhalese Social Organisations states, “Gamsabhavas or Village Councils consisted of an assembly of the principal and experienced men of the village. The endeavours of this assembly of neighbours were directed not so much to punishment as to amicable settlement of disputes according to accepted canons of justice.”
“It seems history has been repeated. As happened to Gamsabhavas in the 1830s, in 1979 the functions of the Conciliation Boards were peremptorily dismissed and vested interests prevailed over community concerns.”

B5. Theja Gunawardana – a Leading Pioneer in SL’s Left Movement
an Indomitable Fighter for Social Justice – Kalyananda Tiranagama
The 25th anniversary of the death of Theja Gunawardana, a great personality and indefatigable fighter for social justice who played an indelible role in the Left Movement in Sri Lanka, falls on July 17, 2020. Most people belonging to the present generations may not be aware of the role Theja played and the contributions she made in the early stages of the Left Movement in our country and for the anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist struggle in the Afro-Asian Region.
While reading the proceedings of the famous Trine Case reported in the daily newspapers, as a student of age 14 living in Galle, I came to know of Theja for the first time in 1954. A news item in Trine, a weekly tabloid newspaper published by her, had stated that Minister of Finance Oliver Goonetilake had committed an act of corruption by receiving a commission while negotiating a loan one month prior to his appointment as Governor General. Theja was tried at a Trial-at-Bar before 3 Judges of the Supreme Court on the charges of criminally defaming Sir Oliver Goonetilake, the newly appointed Governor General and thereby creating ‘civil commotion’. It was the first Trial-at-Bar ever held in Sri Lanka and Theja was defended by the well-known English Queen’s Counsel DN Pritt, who had conducted the defence in several politically sensational cases – eg Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, Lee Kuan-Yu of Singapore. Wide publicity was given to the Trine Case proceedings in local newspapers, which left an indelible mark in my memory of Theja as a heroic woman who had the courage and audacity to challenge any authority.
In his autobiography, The Defence Accuses, DN Pritt paid high tribute to her as a remarkable personality with a high moral character: “(the Government) certainly regarded this fearless, critical and incorruptible woman as a great thorn in their flesh… I was, she told me, never to apologise for a syllable or comma, nor to express regret, or anything but a determination to prove up to the hilt the charges she had made; and I was not to worry for an instant about the risk she was running of imprisonment, and in particular of imprisonment for a much longer term than would be imposed if she did not ‘justify’.”
The case against Theja was a landmark in the history of the Left movement of the country. It not only aroused much public interest, but ultimately turned out as an indictment against the Government. She was acquitted of all charges and carried in a huge procession from the Court to Pettah.
Theja came from a very rich family. Her father Manage Piyadasa was a member of the Ceylon National Congress, Mahabodhi Society and the Buddhist Theosophical Society. He was a philanthropist who built 4 educational institutions. Her mother Elizabeth Ponweera was an educationist. Theja was well-versed in several languages. She offered English, French, Latin, Geography and Mathematics for London Matriculation in 1935. She got her BA in English Honours in 1939. She studied Spanish to write on the Cuban Revolution.
Instead of pursuing personal goals, immediately after completing her University education, Theja became an active social worker devoting her time, energy and wealth for the upliftment of rural women through Lanka Mahila Samiti… On the recommendation of DS Senanayake, the first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Theja was selected by the US State Department for a study tour covering rural welfare, education, cultural and sociological fields under its Exchange of Persons Program in 1950.
Immediately after her return from the Study Tour in the US, Theja realized she had to play a more dynamic role in the progressive movement in Sri Lanka, if she were to make a greater contribution to the progress of the people. She made a pioneering role to promote friendship between socialist countries and the people of Sri Lanka, to educate them on the vast achievements made by the people in socialist countries then.
She was the Founder President of the Ceylon-China Friendship Association in 1950. For 10 years as President and for another 16 years till 1975 as VP of the Association, she devoted her time and energy for promoting friendship between the people of Sri Lanka and China. From 1970-74 she functioned as the VP of the Ceylon–North Vietnam and Ceylon-North Korea Friendship Associations and SL-Cambodia Cultural Parishad.
Theja played a key role in the World Peace Council. From 1952-62 she functioned as the Secretary of Ceylon Peace Council. She was elected a Bureau Member of the World Peace Council in Vienna in 1955. From 1955-62 she led the Sri Lanka delegation to 5 World Conferences against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs in Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. During the same period she was the World Peace Council Bureau Secretary in Delhi, Stockholm, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Theja was a leading figure in the Afro-Asian Solidarity Movement against colonialism and imperialism. She was a Founder Member of the Afro-Asian Solidarity Secretariat in Cairo, Egypt, in 1956. She was the President of the Afro-Asian Solidarity Association of Ceylon 1958-65. She was a delegate to the Afro-Asian Women’s Conference held in Cairo in 1961. She made a valuable contribution to Afro-Asian Solidarity against colonialism and imperialism at the AAS Conferences held in Cairo, Moshi (Tanzania) and Cyprus, 1958-64. She was the Chairperson of the Asian Economic Seminar held in Colombo and of the 2nd Asian Economic Seminar held in Pyongyang in 1963. She also played a key role at the Afro-Asian Writers Conference held in Peking in 1966. Theja was the livewire of the Lanka Kantha Peramuna, the Women’s Front of the Communist Party.
I met Theja for the first time in 1963 when I visited Colombo to attend the Congress of the Ceylon CP, representing the Peradeniya University Party group. That was the time the Sino-Soviet split was emerging. She took a principled stand in every split that occurred in the Left Movement of Sri Lanka. She always took the side of the weak, the poor, radical and emerging groups, as against the strong, the rich, reformist and established groups. Her house was open to every radical group fighting for social justice, for creating a better world. She generously supported them all. I made it a point to visit her whenever I came to Colombo and seek her advice and support for our activities as young radicals.
Theja Gunawardane is linked to one of the most memorable incidents in my life. During the Youth Uprising of 1971 the Criminal Investigation Department of Sri Lanka Police arrested me on April 12, 1971, at Theja’s house at Temple Rd, Maradana. At that time I was practising as a lawyer in Ratnapura and Avissawella courts. While I was there, Theja’s house was surrounded and searched by the Police. The Police identified me. I was manacled and assaulted then and there. Theja, her daughter Shanthi and I were brought to the notorious 4th Floor of the CID. I was badly assaulted and tortured and taken to the Welikada Prison the following night. I spent 2 years and 8 months at Welikada and Jaffna Prisons, detained under the Emergency Regulations as a security risk.
Theja Gunawardana was such a giant in our own circumstances, a great multifaceted personality with varied talents and skills who was destined to play a significant role and make a valuable contribution to the people’s movement in the era of anti-imperialist struggle not only in Sri Lanka, but also in the Asia-Africa Region.
Theja shone in a number of fields: a dedicated social worker, a pioneer leader in the women’s movement in Sri Lanka, author of many publications dealing with different subjects, a historian par excellence, a talented artist who not only brought out her own artistic creations of high quality but also generously supported other artists in their efforts to create people-oriented productions of high quality, a journalist who edited several newspapers and journals, a person with a wide knowledge and understanding of different religious doctrines and philosophies, and a fearless researcher who never hesitated to boldly examine and subject to review any established practice or view.
There were a number of works written by her dealing with world peace, anti-imperialist struggles, socialist gains, and the split in the socialist camp: Never Again Wills Japan (against the threat of nuclear war), Venceremos (We Shall Win – on the triumph of Cuban Revolution), Congo Survives Operation Great Divide (revealing the imperialist plot against Patrice Lumumba), Whither India-China Relations, White Heat for Green Carpet (on People’s Communes in China), Khruschevism (revisionism in the USSR), China’s Cultural Revolution. All in-depth studies on contemporary issues.
She took much effort to bring forward traditional dancers in the country and took the initiative to set up Jathika Kala Peramuna (National Arts Front). She made an important contribution to the development of the cultural life of this country when she served as a member of the Commission for organizing the College of Fine Arts[, Oriental Dancing and Music (popularly known as the Heywood Institute)]. Kohomba Kankariya (Dance Drama of the Ravana Dynasty), published in 1975 in Sinhala and English, was the culmination of her 42 years of research in the cultural and anthropological fields. It is a great work of art.
Theja did vast research on early history of Sri Lanka. Much of her research still remains in the form of manuscripts… Theja never hesitated to express controversial views based on her findings in her research and studies.
She did deep studies on comparative religion. She remained a member of Theosophical Society for a long time. She wrote a large number of articles and presented papers at Inter Religion Seminars held in Bangalore, China, London, Islamabad, Lahore, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, 1969-83. She wrote extensively on Islam, Christianity and Buddhism.
Theja Gunawardana never sought power, fame or position. She was a good friend of both Prime Ministers SWRD and Sirimavo Bandaranaike. [and was made] Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Pakistan and Iran, 1974-77.
Theja played a historic role in the anti-imperialist, anti-colonialist struggles in the last half century. She devoted all her time, energy and wealth for the service of the people not only of Sri Lanka, but also of other countries struggling against colonialism and for economic, cultural and social independence. Great personalities like Theja are rarely born in the world.

‘It is extremely worrying when Cabinet spokesman, Minister Bandula Gunawardene, is reported to have stated at a media briefing, while denying signing the MCC agreement, that the Government has entered into ACSA and SOFA agreements with the US Government. ‘India has lately increased cooperation with the US military. In 2016, it concluded a logistics support agreement, and in 2018, it reached a communication security agreement and an accord on geospatial cooperation. Moreover, India has embraced, at least rhetorically, the US concept of a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” and is gradually abandoning its reluctance to participate in the US-led “Quad,” an informal four-country grouping (which also includes Australia and Japan) focused on countering China’s regional ambitions. The foundations have been laid for a more substantive strategic shift.’

• Trudeaus Caught Pocketing NGO WE Money
“WE has directed young people towards ineffective political actions and a narrow understanding of doing good in the world…teaching kids that ‘breaking the cycle of poverty’ (WE’s words) involves travelling to a ‘developing’ country to build a school and not marching on the IMF, World Bank, White House or Parliament Hill to demand the cancellation of global South debts. That’s the real #WEscam.” In fact, a little discussed reason the federal government funds NGOs is to co-opt internationalist minded young people into aligning with Canadian foreign policy. “A generation of kids have learned about ‘international development’ but still don’t know what an IMF structural adjustment program is.” Imposed by the Washington-based international financial institution, structural adjustment programs (SAPs) pushed indebted African, Asian and Latin American countries to privatize state assets, weaken labour regulations and liberalize trade and investment rules. Through the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s Canada channeled hundreds of millions of dollars in “aid” to support SAPs. Canadian mining companies greatly benefited from liberalized mining laws, but structural adjustment policies produced deep social and economic crises. Nutritional status, health, education and other social indicators declined in the wake of SAPs.

‘Established under the brilliant engineer Dr. ANS Kulasinghe, it had the capacity to design and build any type of building and carry out any civil engineering project. With its inception in 1962, SEC’s footprint was practically there in all the national civil and building projects. The list is too long, and included the beautiful Colombo Planetarium, all the large industrial projects from Oruwala Steel, Thulhiriya Textile, Plywood Kosgama, Tyre Kelaniya….office complexes like Peoples Bank, Insurance Corp, CWE, SEC Head office, universities and a multitude of housing complexes. Further, SEC was the local civil contractor to the Polgolla dam and Ukuwela powerhouse in the first stage of Mahaweli. Later they were involved with the construction of Khettarama Stadium, Hambantota Stadium, Cricket Board Hq at the SSC and so on. You can’t forget their role in the re-erection of Maligawila Buddha Statue, Golden Roof of the Dalada Maligawa and many cultural projects…. Till about the mid-1990s, they were the only local contracting organization that could design and build using prestressed concrete technology, and had well equipped precast yards. To my knowledge that knowhow and the facilities are still there.’

‘The casual discussions, I have had with young ones who have passed the ordinary level exam, mostly the non medical staff at the private hospitals, clearly expose their lack of any knowledge of history. Recently, I found that many of them have not heard about Lincoln, Hitler, Mandela, world wars, slavery or the assassination of one of our own prime ministers and a president. Only a few knew that we had been colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British!’

• The Infinity Stones of a steamroller majority – Jayatilleka
‘An ultra-violent social upheaval (1986-89) was traced back by the Presidential Youth Commission – of which Prof. G.L. Pieris was a member – to, among other things, the alteration in the character of the state apparatus and sector, which caused recruitment and resource allocation choices to be made not in a neutral fashion on merit, but on political criteria as patronage, because the independent Public Service Commission had been eliminated by the 1972 Constitution and not restored by the 1978 Constitution.’

• Antistalinism is Left-Wing Racism – Part 1
‘Why do some among the Left shriek in horror and cry ‘Stalinist’ upon hearing anything positive about the Soviet Union, China, or any other country where a Communist Party took power? Why does such Anti-Stalinism dominate the Left only in countries with a history of being the colonisers? Leftism with Imperial characteristics? The ‘Imperial Left’ perhaps? That former term is a much broader church, the focus here is on the geopolitical substance of ‘Anti–Stalinism’.’
